Seven States of Consciousness

As a scientist of consciousness, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi revived age-old knowledge from the Vedic Tradition that elucidates higher states of consciousness.

What does "Vedic" mean?

The word "Veda" (VAY-da) means "Knowledge". It describes the ancient tradition of knowledge from which the Transcendental Meditation technique is derived.

According to scholars, the Vedic Tradition is the oldest continuous tradition of knowledge on Earth, dating back at least 10,000 years. This tradition includes detailed information on a wide range of topics - from health care to architecture, from agriculture to music. It's the tradition that gave us yoga.

The Vedic Tradition focuses especially on knowledge about consciousness, technologies of self-development, and growth to higher stages of human develop, or enlightenment - described as the state of peak mental performance and optimal health and well-being.

Some people assume that the Vedic wisdom is strictly a cultural tradition, relevant only in India. Others see it as a philosophical tradition, and others yet as a religious tradition.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the TM programme, worked to restore aspects of Vedic knowledge that had fallen into disuse or had been lost. He understood the Vedic Tradition to contain practical knowledge that is as scientific, and as measurable in its effects, as knowledge from modern physics. In this sense, just as Newton's Laws of Motion are not English or Christian, nor Einstein's Theory of Relativity German or Jewish, the TM technique, revived from the Vedic Tradition, is a scientific discovery based on laws of nature that are true and universal for all people and cultures.

These higher states, completely natural to the human nervous system, are characterised by greater bliss and creativity, higher functioning intelligence and spiritual fulfilment.

Maharishi worked for decades with scientists from around the world to establish the psychological, physiological and neurophysiological parameters of higher consciousness. The TM programme provides the practical and theoretical framework whereby these higher stages of human development are now within reach - everyone's natural birthright.

Scientific Research on the TM and TM-Sidhi Programmes

Scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation technique began in the early 1970s with the first published studies on the effects of Transcendental Meditation. Researchers at UCLA and Harvard discovered that TM  produces a state of profound relaxation along with increased inner wakefulness.

There are now over 600 scientific studies on Transcendental Meditation - with over 350 studies published in peer-reviewed science journals - confirming a holistic range of benefits for mind, body, relationships and the environment.

The Maharishi Effect

The Maharishi Effect is the phenomenon of rising coherence in collective consciousness, measured by social indicators such as decreased crime, accident and hospitalisation rates, resulting from a small percentage of that population practising Transcendental Meditation or TM-Sidhi Programme®

Verified by more than 20 published studies in leading peer-reviewed journals, the Maharishi Effect offers a practical, scientific formula for large-scale social change.

Brain Health

Research in neuroscience has shown that the most important thing about your brain may be its level of "coherence" or "integration."

During Transcendental Meditation, your brain becomes highly coherent and integrated - all the different parts start working together better as a whole.

Studies show that this more holistic style of brain functioning leads to heightened creativity, increased intelligence and overall improved performance.

The Unified Field of All the Laws of Nature

In recent decades, modern physics has probed deeper and deeper into matter, discovering that the laws of nature are unified at their source.

Just as this fundamental field is known to underly everything in the universe, it resides also deep within the human mind - and is experienced as a field of pure potentiality in the state of transcendence.

During Transcendental Meditation, we touch that level of life where everyone and everything is interconnected.
